I realized what I needed to do to tie the front and back of the first half of the book together. I also realized that some of the things that happen that I assumed were unnecessary to plot... actually are VERY necessary to plot and if not for those things part two and Crossroads and several other stories down the road wouldn't happen otherwise.
Whoa. Maybe I'm getting this down a bit.
I think one problem is I am a lazy person at heart. :P Now that I think I have figured some of this stuff out I am going to have to write it down.
I am also writing down the scenes that have come to mind. as they come to mind. Which so far isn't too far off of the chronological order. My OCD however is having fits.
But getting it down is the important part. Anyways, here is a snip. This is just about where shit hits the fan.
Merdoc shook his head and walked away. If he didn't he would have said something he'd regret later. He tried, again, to 'send' to Zander and then Nyhavi. Still nothing. He swore. It was unlike them. In fact the silence of the whole company up at Headquarters had left all of the Sarukai uneasy and edgy. Not even the Emperor could get anyone to respond.
Merdoc was halfway through the stables before he realized he was even in the stables. He heard it, the sounds of a horse blowing out, snorting and pacing. he went around the corner and halted. There was a slender child standing in front of one of the stallion stalls. Her rahaun double-tipped ears poked from her dark hair.
"Ivona what are you doing here?" Merdoc glanced around frowning. Tienovey was usually pretty close by. The child looked towards him, her dark blue eyes so much like her sire's he had to look away.
"Gryphan is upset." she held an apple in one hand. "I think he wants to get father."
Merdoc looked at the large gray. He was the one making the noise, pacing back and forth stopping every now and then to give a sharp shrill whinny before pacing again.
"Have you found him yet?" She asked.
Merdoc leaned against the wall and considered. Zander didn't hide things from her. "Not yet, still looking."
She looked back towards the horse, her lower lip quivering. "I saw him in my dream last night. Mother said it wasn't important."
Merdoc frowned. "Where was he?"
"On the plain of _____. He was looking very..." She shuddered. "Tired."
Merdoc pushed from the wall, glancing towards Gryphan. The stallion was stock still, only his ears twitching as Ivona spoke.
"I dreamed that there was a big fight at the Headquarters. That there was a big soldier in dragon armor and a red-haired rahaun. Merdoc I've never seen a red-haired rahaun..."
"They are very rare, old family line that is mostly gone. What else have you dreamed?" he was having a hard time catching his breath, he 'reached' out to Lyndele, the Sarukai advisor to the Emperor relaying the conversation. He felt the mental ears tuning in as Ivona continued speaking, looking down at the apple in her hand.
"I dreamed that there were dead people on spiderbacks racing through tunnels. Mother told me not to talk about it, that it was just silly dreams."
"Ivona, your dreams are important." Valen had come up and crouched down beside her. "Isn't that what your father said?"
She nodded.
"What else have you dreamed?" The Emperor's voice from Merdoc's mouth. He inwardly shuddered at the immense time behind the mind of his sovereign. Ivona's eyes went wide and she glanced from Valen to Merdoc.
"I dreamed the dragon gates opened."
"Shit." Valen swore standing and looking angrily at Merdoc. Ivona took a step back.
"How often have you dreamed that?" Merdoc was at the mercy of the mind of the Emporer.
"Always."
The mind was gone and Merdoc could feel the distress and anger from the other Sarukai who'd been listening. Even Caomieh far to the west was trying to invent new curse words.
"Did I do something wrong?"
"No, Ivona." Merdoc looked at Valen. "Gather about a hundred, light cavalry, extra horses."
"And blankets." Ivona said quickly. She held the apple up to Gryphan who took it. "They're cold."
"They?" Valen asked.
"The others who are with him."
Valen took off pounding down the walkway.
Merdoc crouched where Valen had, trying to keep his voice level. "Anytime you have a dream, you find me or one of the other Sarukai and tell them."
"But mother..."
"Didn't understand how important the dreams really are. I'll talk to her about it. For now, Nadja is going to escort you back to the palace."
"Merdoc it's boring there!" She pouted.
"When your father gets back he'll expect you to be where you are supposed to be. And so will I."
She straightened up and slowly nodded, taking Nadja's hand. She half turned and waved. "Bye Gryphan!"
The silence in the stables was deafening after she left, soldiers of Bryte Lyte hovered, staring at him. He took several deep breaths, fighting the urge to find Tienovey and shake her. He turned towards Gryphan, rubbing the horse's nose and glanced at the closest soldier.
"Drem, go check the other missing Sarukai's horses, see if they seem restless." the man nodded and darted away, startling the horses in the stalls across the way. "Valen?"
"They are gathering in the main yard. With extra blankets and Nordel is insisting on going. Was Kiameh at Headquarters?"
"Last I heard." Merdoc shuddered. Ivona's words echoing back at him. Fighting. How many had been lost.
"The two she described... you went pale." Valen asked. "Why?"
"The slayer and his bitch Sorsha." Merdoc snarled it out.
"Wait, Immortal Slayer?" one of the other soldier asked. His eyes were wide.
"Usually makes the first strike in the God Wars." Merdoc could 'hear' the sudden explosion in mental discussion. The other Sarukai were demanding Tienovey be punished, the Emperor was trying to get order. Soemone pointed out the Sarukai of the Northern Empire were compromised. Merdoc blocked it out. If Ivona's dream were, as he suspected, true visions then there were soldiers on the plains in the dead of winter. He didn't need to hear the others to know what to do.
"If her dream is correct, we are in a hell of a lot of trouble." Valen said.
Merdoc nodded. He pulled the halter down off it's peg and eyed Gryphan.
"Now you are going to lead us to him. Got it?" The horse nickered. "No running too fast. We have to be able to see you so we can help him."
Gryphan stuck his head out, lips curling and ears back and let loose a sound that hurt his ears. Merdoc chuckled and put the halter on him. When he opened the stall, the horse pranced but stayed near him.
"Lets go."
I know, it is out of context and you don't know who the heck anyone is but I am very proud of that piece. :P
oh, and Merdoc? Well the dude in my icon looks how I've imagined Merdoc.
